WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -
The No. 53 Maryland men's tennis team received a rude welcoming from No. 29 Wake Forest as the Terps fell, 6-1, in Winston Salem, N.C.
The Deacons (10-6, 2-1) earned the doubles point and went on to win a series of close matches against the visiting Terps (9-4, 1-3).
The Terps won a pair of matches involving junior Boris Fetbroyt, as he paired with Andrew Orban to win at No. 1 doubles, and then earned another win at singles.
The No. 18-ranked doubles team of Orban and Fetbroyt earned a win against the No. 14-ranked doubles team of Corey Parr and Steve Forman, 8-4.
The No. 40-ranked doubles team of Nickolai Nielsen and Amit Inbar fell in their first match with a national ranking, as they lost at No. 2 doubles to Wake Forest's Andrew Brasseaux and Carlos Salmon, 8-4.
The team of David Kwon and Michael Coleman put up a great fight trying to earn the doubles point for the Terps, but in the end they fell to Jason Morgenstern and Mariusz Adamski, 8-6.
Orban took a 5-4 lead in the first set against Adamski at No. 3 singles, but had to forfeit as he retired from the match due to an injury.
Orban's doubles partner, Fetbroyt, got off to a quick start at No. 4 singles against Salmon, and went on to win convincingly, 6-2, 6-1.
Kwon battled against Forman, the No. 89-ranked singles player in the nation, but couldn't pull off the upset, losing at No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-4.
Forman's win gave Wake Forest a 4-1 lead, clinching the match.
Inbar, who is the No. 68-ranked singles player in the nation, took the first set against Parr, but lost momentum in the second set. Inbar lost to the 59th-ranked player in the nation 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Terps will be back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they play at NC State.
