The No. 19/22 Maryland women's basketball team won at Delaware State 79-49 Sunday afternoon in Memorial Hall. The Terrapins dominated the inside game, outscoring the Hornets 50-14 in the paint.
Four Terrapins scored in double figures. Freshman Alyssa Thomas led with 17, while junior Lynetta Kizer notched her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 boards.
Sophomore Tianna Hawkins scored 15 for her third straight game in double figures. Freshman Alicia DeVaughn scored a career-high 13 points, as she went 7-for-11 at the foul line and grabbed seven rebounds. Thomas added seven rebounds as well.
Maryland held a close lead for much of the first half. The Hornets took a one point lead with 2:36 remaining off of a layup by Deanna Harmon. The Terps responded by closing the first half with a 10-point run, sparked by Diandra Tchatchouang's jumper to go up by one. They took a 34-25 lead into the break.
The Terrapins continued their run coming out of halftime. The Hornets did not score until 6:25 into the second half. Over the first eight minutes of the period, Maryland went on a 19-2 run.
The Terps dominated the glass, outrebounding the Hornets 44-28. They forced the Hornets into 18 turnovers, while Maryland had 14. Kizer added four blocks.
The Terrapins shot 50.9 percent from the field and dished 19 assists as a team. Sophomore Dara Taylor led with five assists.
Up next, Maryland will play host to No. 18/18 St. John's, La Salle and Liberty in the annual Terrapin Classic Dec. 28-29. The Terps and La Salle will play Dec. 28 at noon, while Liberty and St. John's will tip off at 2:30. The Terrapins will play at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 29.
