Postgame Quotes: No. 6 Maryland 74, Michigan 65
Nov. 30, 2011
Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"You know, just a tremendous win. What I liked about this game is that from start to finish we had to work, and I thought we learned a lot about ourselves. It was a game we had to compete and go after for 40 minutes, even at times we were struggling with our shot, with our defense, we gave just tremendous effort and intensity. I just loved the fact of how we were able to finish the game. We really, with our depth and down the stretch, we were able to wear them out and finish the game strong."
On being challenged by Michigan:
"Obviously our first, biggest challenge was Georgetown. To be able to have a game like this to get us prepared for what's ahead and as we get ready for ACC play. The fact is, this is a really good Michigan team, a veteran led team, with the upperclassmen that play for them. It was just a great, quality win."
On the style of play:
"We talked about which style of play and tempo was going to win out in this game, and obviously for us, being able to run and transition, being able to dominate the glass, were two key areas we were really successful in tonight."
On the first half tie:
"I thought we kind of settled, we kind of got comfortable. The last eight minutes of the first half. We didn't fight, we got tired, and credit to them, they had a lot of shots. I thought we could be tougher, in terms of making plays and defending. We talked about wanting to play a complete 20 minute game in the second half."
On the second half defense:
"I think we did a better job in terms of communicating and getting out there on the shooters. We had some lapses obviously in the first half in our zone, and then when we went back to the zone in the second half, we did a better job in terms of closing out onto those shooters and making their shots difficult."
On the upcoming game at American:
"We've got to continue to stay hungry. We see these great teams, like Michigan that we faced tonight. There's always teams working out there to get better that we're going to go against. We've got to stay humble in our approach and just continue to get better."
Sophomore forward Alyssa Thomas
On Michigan's defensive play during the second half:
"They tightened it up [on me] and that just gave my teammates opportunities to score and get more points."
On feeling challenged in the game:
"We have been working very hard and have been waiting for someone to really challenge us. To get the opportunity on our home court really excited us."
On getting her first three point shot:
"I was really excited. At the time I didn't know it was a three, but when I looked up at the scoreboard I was pretty excited about it."
Junior forward Tianna Hawkins
On time on the court without Alyssa Thomas:
"Everything was coming along and with the passes she had she saw the open man and was successful at delivering the ball."
Michigan Head Coach Kevin Borseth
Opening Statement
"I think Maryland's the No. 6 team in the country, I can see why. I think they're very good and I'm proud of the way our kids played."
On his team's game plan:
"I really felt coming into this game that we had to do a couple things because we knew the transition game rebounding were going to be extremely difficult because they're so strong around the basket. We thought we had to take care of it and I thought our players did a pretty good job at that. I thought we had to get rhythm shots and I we did a pretty good job at that, and were able to make them until we got to the 59 point mark. We were stuck on that for a while.
On giving Maryland a tough game:
"Down to the five minute mark we were right there and we got stuck on 59. They turned the defense up at the five minute mark and it got really physical at that point. We got bumped off a couple cuts, the kids might have been a bit tired, they were a little more physical than we were down the stretch but that's how the game is played. It's a good learning experience for our kids and something that we have to build off as we move forward."
