The fourth-seeded Maryland women's basketball team fell to fifth-seeded Georgia Tech 70-64 Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Junior Kim Rodgers led the Terrapins (23-7, 9-5) with 13 points, while ACC Rookie of the Year Alyssa Thomas added 12. Rodgers was 3-for-6 from outside the arc. Thomas led the team with six boards in her 21 minutes.
Sasha Goodlet led the Yellow Jackets (23-9, 9-5) with a game-high 18, while Alex Montgomery had 17.
The first half alone featured six ties, 12 lead changes and a big run by each team. Maryland trailed by nine, 28-19, with 2:58 remaining. A jumper by Tianna Hawkins jumpstarted a 10-0 run that would give the Terps a 29-28 lead at the break.
Although the Yellow Jackets scored the first basket of the second half, Maryland continued its run that started before halftime. Maryland's 22-2 run that spanned intermission gave the Terrapins a 41-30 lead less than four minutes into the second period.
Georgia Tech fought back to take a 56-47 lead with a 26-6 run. The Terrapins closed to within two off a pair of made free throws by Lynetta Kizer with 1:17 remaining.
Thomas picked up her third personal foul with 10:17 remaining in the game. Her fourth foul with 7:19 left forced the Terps' leading scorer to the bench.
The Terps scored 30 points off Georgia Tech's 25 turnovers.
Maryland went 15-for-19 at the line, with Kizer going 7-for-8.
Junior Anjale Barrett, the ACC's assist leader in conference games, dished six assists.
The Terrapins won the two teams' previous meeting this season 56-53 in Atlanta on Feb. 3. Rodgers hit a three at the buzzer for the win.
NOTE: Junior Kim Rodgers was named to the ACC's All-Academic team the league announced Friday. Rodgers graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in communications in August 2010 and is currently working on her psychology degree. A total of 18 student-athletes from 10 of the league's 12 schools were named to the All-ACC Women's Basketball Academic Team. To be eligible for consideration for the academic squad, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
