CARY, N.C. - This week's quick hits heading into the 2011 ACC Championship:

    • No. 48 Maryland (11-11, 3-8) heads to the 2011 ACC Championship on Thursday where it will face Florida State (9-13, 4-7) in opening-round action. The ninth-seeded Terps and eighth-seeded Demon Deacons will play at 9 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The winner of that match will play No. 1 seed Virginia (26-0, 11-0) at 9 a.m. Friday in quarterfinal action. Florida State, which is No. 44 in the ITA national rankings, edged Maryland, 4-3, when the faced off in Tallahassee on April 10.

    • The Terps, who were as high as No. 42 in the ITA rankings this season, feature one of the youngest rosters in the nation. Seven of the team's 11 players are sophomores, two are freshmen and there is only one senior.

    • Maryland's Maros Horny, a transfer from Baylor, is currently No. 106 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Horny has 16 singles wins this year, including an upset victory over then No. 1 singles player John Patrick Smith of Tennessee. Horny is also ranked in doubles play, along with partner Jan Surovic. The pair is currently No. 79 in ITA doubles rankings.

    • Sophomore Tommy Laine leads the team with 15 dual singles victories this season. Sophomore John Collins has contributed 12 dual singles wins on the season and has three victories over nationally-ranked foes. The Maryland duos of Maros Horny/Andy Magee and Collins/Surovic are tied for the team lead with seven dual doubles victories. Sophomore Jesse Kiuru is on a hot streak, winning six of his last nine dual singles matches.

    • Head coach Kyle Spencer is in his second season at Maryland. The 2009 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year spent three seasons with Baylor prior to joining Maryland last year. Spencer is continuing to build the program, leading the Terps to victories over four ranked opponents in 2011. Maryland amassed a total of four victories over ranked opponents in the past four years. The Terps have faced a total of 15 ranked opponents, and all of Maryland's losses have occurred against top 50 teams.
