Maryland point guard Brene Moseley was voted a third team Freshman All-American by Full Court (fullcourt.com), an online publication covering women's basketball. Moseley, who goes by the nickname, "Bones," is one of just 15 freshmen from across NCAA women's basketball that received Freshman All-American honors. Moseley was also voted to the ACC's All-Freshman team, continuing Maryland's tradition of early success for players.
Making these honors even more impressive is the fact that Moseley missed her senior year of high school basketball while recovering from an ACL injury. That meant making the jump from Montgomery County, Maryland public school basketball to ACC basketball while coming off a severe injury. Moseley sported a knee brace all season long. Add to that, Moseley was not considered a Top 60 recruit coming out of high school and it's clear to see she displayed a game better than many had thought.
"I'm really happy for Brene that she's received some recognition for what she accomplished this year," said Maryland head coach Brenda Frese. "Brene has a tremendous feel for the game. Already as a freshman, when we watch video, she might ask the best questions of any player I've coached. What also really sets her apart is that she's not afraid of the big moments. In any setting she has the courage to try stuff- not every player has that."
Moseley shot a team-best 41 percent from beyond the three point line, 86 percent from the free throw line, averaged almost 7 points per game and dished out 2.7 assists per game while appearing in all 36 games this past season. The numbers only tell part of the story, as Moseley became a clutch, pressure performer for Maryland in some of it's biggest games.
In the memorable, come-from-behind NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 win over defending national champion Texas A&M, Moseley hit a lean-in, free throw line jumper with the shot-clock winding down that gave Maryland a 74-73 lead. Moseley also hit senior Lynetta Kizer with a perfect pass on a pick and roll to give the Terps a 75-74 lead. Off the bench, Moseley gave Maryland a critical boost with seven points, six assists and two steals.
Moseley also had strong performances in the ACC Tournament, with nine points in the semifinal win over Wake Forest and 13 points in the quarterfinal win over Virginia.
In Maryland's dramatic, 63-61 regular season win over Duke, Moseley had seven points and six assists.
Moseley provided foreshadowing for her late-season heroics in just her third game as a college freshman, when she dropped 26 points and dished out 4 assists in a win over Towson. Her performance led her to the ACC's Rookie of the Week honor.
