COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland women’s basketball head coach Brenda Frese earned her 400th career win as the No. 8 Terrapins cruised to a 97-41 victory over Detroit on Friday.
Freshman Kiah Gillespie had 18 points to lead the Terrapins (3-0), who have won their first three games of the season by an average of 50 points.
Brene Moseley had 13 points and 10 assists and Kristen Confroy added 12 points for Maryland, which had six players score in double figures.
Rosanna Reynolds scored 15 points and Nicole Urbanick added 10 for Detroit (0-3).
Frese was honored for the milestone with a postgame video. It offered congratulations from former mentor and Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon and former Terp and WNBA player Marissa Coleman, among others.
Head coach Brenda Frese picked up career win No. 400 Friday. She carries a record of 400-134 (.749) over 17 seasons as a head coach. Over her time at Ball State, Minnesota and Maryland Frese led her teams to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA Championship. She was named Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2002.
The Terrapins welcomed over 2,600 local elementary school students as part of their second annual Field Trip Day. Maryland offered free admission to local elementary school classes. Preregistered classes received free lesson plans aligned with Common Core standards, focusing on numeracy and literacy, while familiarizing students with the game of basketball.
The Terrapins are ranked No. 6 in the USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches poll and No. 8 in the Associated Press poll.
Next, the Terps will head to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas next week. They will play Old Dominion (1-2) Thursday at 5:45 p.m. ET, South Dakota State (2-0) Friday at 5:45 p.m. ET and Pittsburgh (2-0) Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
All three games will be streamed live online for free through ParadiseJam.com and live stats will be available as well.
