ROSEMONT, Ill. – After helping the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team remain undefeated on the season, Taylor Cummings, Alice Mercer and Megan Whittle were selected as the Big Ten Players of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday.
Cummings was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after leading the Terrapins against No. 11 Penn and No. 15 James Madison. Cummings scored a hat trick and recorded two assists against the Quakers. She posted a career-high 11 draw controls and two ground balls while causing four turnovers in the team’s 12-7 win over Penn. Cummings matched her new career high with another 11 draw controls in a 14-10 win over the Dukes. She also scored twice and recorded two assists, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Cummings is tied with Whittle for the conference lead in goals (28), which places the duo 10th in the NCAA. The midfielder also leads the Big Ten in draw controls, caused turnovers and points.
Mercer was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the first time. Against Penn, Mercer helped the defense hold the Quakers to seven goals. Against JMU, Mercer caused a game-high four turnovers and picked up a ground ball. She is second on the team with eight caused turnovers this season.
Whittle was named Freshman of the Week for the third time. She scored four goals against Penn before posting a hat trick and an assist against James Madison. Whittle also picked up a draw control and caused a turnover against the Dukes. Whittle is tied for the conference lead in goals with Cummings. She was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List last week, making her the only freshman on the list.
Whittle is second on the team with 30 points this season.
The Terps (9-0) travel to No. 4 Northwestern (5-2) Wednesday to kick off the inaugural Big Ten lacrosse season. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
