ROSEMONT, Ill. – Following the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team’s first-ever Big Ten win, Taylor Cummings, Alex Fitzpatrick and Megan Whittle were named the conference’s players of the week, as announced Monday.
The Terrapins defeated then-No. 4 Northwestern, 16-5, last Thursday to open conference play. Cummings was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week after posting five points (2G, 3A) against the Wildcats. After setting a career high in the draw circle the week before, Cummings set a new personal best with 13 draws against Northwestern. She also recorded three ground balls and caused a turnover.
Cummings is ranked fifth nationally in draw controls/game (7.50). She leads the team in assists, points, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers. This is the third time she’s earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. Cummings shares this week’s award with Penn State’s Tatum Coffey.
Fitzpatrick was named Defensive Player of the Week after picking up her 10th in of the season over Northwestern. She made six saves while allowing just five goals, more than five less than the Wildcats’ season average. Fitzpatrick leads the Big Ten and is fifth nationally in goals-against average (6.06) and fourth nationally in save percentage (.523).
The redshirt senior has been named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week three times. This is Maryland’s fifth defensive conference award this season.
Whittle earned Freshman of the Week honors after leading the Maryland offense with five goals against Northwestern. She leads the Terps with 33 goals this season. Whittle has scored in all 10 games this season, and has scored more than three goals in three contests. Whittle’s 33 goals rank first in the Big Ten and 12th nationally. She is also 12th in the nation in goals/game (3.30).
This is the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season Whittle has earned the conference’s freshman award.
The Terps (10-0, 1-0 B1G) take a short trip to the nation’s capital to face Georgetown (2-7, 1-0 Big East) Wednesday. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
