#1 Terps Seek Final Four Spot vs. Northwestern

The top-seeded Maryland women’s lacrosse team (18-1) battles No. 8 seed Northwestern (14-6) in the NCAA quarterfinals Sunday. Opening draw is scheduled for noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

  • The No. 1-ranked Terps are averaging 14.42 goals per game while limiting opponents to 7.32 goals per game. The Terrapins have the sixth-ranked scoring defense in the country and the sixth-ranked scoring offense in the NCAA.
  • Junior Taylor Cummings leads the Terrapins with 30 assists, 86 points, 40 ground balls, 130 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers. Freshman Megan Whittle leads Maryland with 63 goals.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick has started all 19 games and holds a 7.03 goals-against average and .463 save percentage.

  • Northwestern defeated Lousville and Notre Dame in the first and second rounds to advance to the quarterfinals.
  • Selena Lasota - the Big Ten Freshman of the Year - leads the Wildcats with 67 goals, 76 points and 23 caused turnovers. Kaleigh Craig, Kara Mupo and Sheila Nesselbush also have 25-plus goals on the season to pace the Northwestern attack.
  • Bridget Bianco has started all 20 games in goal and holds a 9.56 goals-against average and a .407 save percentage.
  • The Wildcats have been to 10 straight NCAA Final Fours and won seven championships in an eight-year span (2005-12).

  • The Terps-Wildcats game Sunday is the fifth time in the past six seasons the teams have met in the NCAA Tournament. This is the first time the teams have met outside the Final Four in that span.
  • The teams competed for the first time as conference rivals in 2015. Led by five goals from Megan Whittle, the Terps defeated the Wildcats, 16-5, in the first-ever Big Ten lacrosse contest on March 26.
  • Wildcats head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller (Maryland '96) was teammates with Cathy Reese (Maryland '98) for two seasons. The duo led the Terps to two undefeated seasons on the way to two NCAA titles from 1995-96.
  • The Terps are 9-6 all-time against the Wildcats. Reese in 3-3 in her coaching career against Northwestern. The Terps have a 6-3 series lead in games played in College Park.

  • The Terps lead the nation with 31 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (58), championship game appearances (18) and NCAA titles (11).
  • Maryland is making its 26th consecutive appearance in the championship (1990-2015).
  • The Terrapins have made six straight Final Fours (2009-14) and captured two titles in that time (2010, 14).
  • In the 2014 championship game, Maryland captured its 11th NCAA title by scoring a 15-12 win against Syracuse.

six terps named to iwlca all-regional team

  • Taylor Cummings, Megan DoutyBrooke GriffinAlice Mercer and Megan Whittle were named to IWLCA All-South Region first team while Zoe Stukenberg earned second team honors. All six Terps were named to the All-Big Ten team last month.
  • Cummings, Douty and Griffin were named ot the All-South Region first team last season while Mercer earned second team honors.
  • The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2015. 
  • These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Monday, May 18.

cummings named tewaaraton finalist

  • Junior midfielder Taylor Cummingswas named one of five finalists for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday.
  • Cummings won the Tewaaraton trophy last season, becoming the youngest female winner in the award’s history.
  • A member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, Cummings’ per game averages for points, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers top the Big Ten, and she ranks fifth in the nation in points and draw controls.
  • Cummings would be the Terps’ sixth Tewaaraton Award winner, and Maryland’s second two-time winner.

terps trip earn top big ten honors

  • Brooke Griffin, Taylor Cummings and Megan Douty earned 2015 Big Ten Conference individual honors, as voted on by the league’s six coaches and announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
  • Griffin was named the conference’s Attack Player of the Year and has 39 goals and 18 assists on the season. The redshirt senior attacker is the leader of the sixth-ranked scoring offense as the Terps are averaging 14.42 goals per game.
  • Cummings was named Midfielder of the Year after leading the Terps in nearly every statistical category. Cummings was named both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week by the conference during the regular season.
  • Douty was named the Defensive Player of the Year after leading the sixth-ranked scoring defense. The senior defender has caused 20 turnovers and picked up 25 ground balls this season.
