Griffin, Cummings, Douty Earn Top Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Brooke Griffin, Taylor Cummings and Megan Douty earned 2015 Big Ten Conference individual honors, as voted on by the league’s six coaches and announced by the conference Monday afternoon.

Griffin was named the conference’s Attack Player of the Year while Cummings earned Midfielder of the Year. Douty was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. The three Terps were named Tewaaraton nominees and to the All-Big Ten team in April.

Griffin leads the Maryland offense and has 39 goals and 18 assists on the season. The redshirt senior attacker is the leader of the seventh-ranked scoring offense as the Terps are averaging 14.17 goals per game.

Cummings leads the team with 29 assists, 82 points, 39 ground balls, 125 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers and is second on the Terps with 53 goals. The junior midfielder ranks fifth nationally in points per game. Cummings has been named to all-conference teams in each of her three seasons at Maryland. She was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week five times and earned Defensive Player of the Week honors once this season.

Douty leads the ninth-ranked Terrapin defense that has allowed just 7.28 goals per game. The senior defender has caused 19 turnovers and picked up 24 ground balls this season. Douty was a two-time Big Ten Defender of the Week this season and was named conference defender of the year last season.

Penn State’s Missy Doherty earned Coach of the Year honors while the Nittany Lions’ Emi Smith garnered Goaltender of the Year accolades. Northwestern’s Selena Lasota was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year.

The Terps will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament this weekend. Maryland will face the winner of the UMass/Jacksonville first round game on Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
