Morgan Tabs Six For Leadership Group

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland women’s soccer head coach Jonathan Morgan announced his six-member leadership group for the upcoming 2015 season Tuesday.

Seniors Sarah Fichtner, Shannon Collins, Erika Nelson, Rachelle Beanlands, Riley Barger and sophomore Alex Anthony make up the unit. The Terps feature a senior laden squad heading into their second year in the Big Ten.

Fichtner started all 18 games last season, tallying a goal and as assist. Barger partnered the Toms River, N.J., native in midfield and added a goal and two assists.

Nelson and Collins return as half of the Terps’ stingy backline that only gave up 17 goals in 2014. Collins totaled six assists as an attacking option from left back while Nelson nabbed one tally.

Beanlands enters her fourth year in goal for the Terps. The Canadian notched six shutouts and played every minute between the posts for Maryland in 2014.

Anthony will lead the Terps frontline after scoring two goals and recording one assist in seven games last year. The Colorado native missed most of the season due to injury.

Maryland faces Virginia on Aug. 17 in exhibition action before the regular season begins with a home match against Kent State on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m.
