COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Malina Howard of the fifth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team (16-2, 5-1 B1G) was named one of 30 candidates in the country for the Senior CLASS Award Tuesday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Visit www.seniorclassaward.com for the full list of candidates.
Howard has been a three-year starter for the Terrapins, helping lead them to two straight Final Fours and the 2015 Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. She graduated in May in just three years, earning her degree in kinesiology. She is currently working on course work for medical school.
Howard was the recipient of the Elite 89 award last April, an award that goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the Final Four. She received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and the Big Ten Medal of Honor last spring as well.
Howard serves as Vice President of Maryland's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), helping to organize community service events for student-athletes.
The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in early February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis in April.
