No. 5/7 Maryland 73, Purdue 59

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:

“Anytime you can come out like we did and get a quality win over a top five opponent in conference is a great thing, especially since we played them twice. I was excited about the toughness to come back and be resilient, getting some quality playing time from our bench and with our freshmen, coming out and making plays. There are still some areas we need to improve on, turnovers being the big one for us. I think it is also a blend of the four games in 10 days, so we need to step back, get some rest and come back and be as sharp as we usually are. Purdue is a great force in causing turnovers, but at the same time we were also great in shooting well from the free throw line as well as our inside-out game.”

On the difference between last game with Purdue and now regarding shoot percentages:

“I think again when you look some of those percentages, it's the turnovers and I think fatigue is a big part of that. I don't think I've seen a stat of Brene Mosley going 0-for-8from the field. She is a very talented player so I think for us work plus rest equals success. We just need to get some good rest in to be able to finish this stretch of four of the last six at home strong.”

On Shatori Walker-Kimbrough's 23 points vs. Purdue:

“They had a tough time matching her, she is a match-up nightmare. Her lane game, the fact that she can be there for rebounds and she was 3-4from the three point line. She is just so dangerous in so many ways, and I think they just had a difficult time trying to find a proper matchup to defend her.”

On if the turnovers were from Purdue’s defense or sloppiness:

“I want to say a blend of both. I mean I do not like when teams give no respect to the defense, because their defense gave us problems. They denied lanes and they kept us off sync a little bit. Then we had some mentally unforced turnovers and those are the one we need to start cutting down on. You know there are great teams in this conference that force us into some tough plays, so yeah I think a blend of both."

Junior Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough

On Purdue’s ability to cut her off in transition:

“I’ve played them a couple times so you could definitely see that was their focus. I think that’s where most of my turnovers came from as well. I have to do a better job staying locked in and recognizing that.”

On focusing on getting the ball down low instead of shooting jump shots:

“Coach told us that we were settling for jump shots too many times. I know there were a few times where I missed Brionna Jones down low and they didn’t have an answer for her. Early on we had to get her the ball and get her touches down there.”

On winning after losing to Ohio State earlier in the week:

“It feels good. We have to get back to our standard and playing to that standard consistently. It’s not an easy thing, but I know if we focus and play to that standard, we are a very good team."

Junior Center Brionna Jones

On getting a win after losing to Ohio State earlier in the week:

“It’s always good to come back and get a win against another great opponent. I think we have to come into our next game with the same attitude.”

Sophomore Guard Kristen Confroy

On their effort defensively:

“I think like any games we had our ups and our downs. I think that’s one thing we’re working on — playing consistently and playing our game.”

On the freshmen play tonight:

“I think they’re definitely accepting their role and realizing that everyone can provide energy no matter how tall, short, or fast you are. They’re really accepting that role and when they come in they’re doing a great job whether it’s rebounding or making the right read."

Purdue Head Coach Sharon Versyp

Opening Statement:

“I knew it was going to be tough. Maryland is a great team and it is not always who you are playing, but when you’re playing them. I know they lost to Ohio State so they were even more focused than ever before. Last time they had one player, Walker-Kimbrough, who went off against us. Today we did a better job and for us to score more points in the paint was a huge advantage. When you get to the foul line 21 times and our team doesn’t, that’s a big difference."

On discrepancy of free throw attempts between two teams:

“I couldn’t really tell you. I wasn’t really pleased with a lot of things today.”

On game plan of Walker-Kimbrough:

We switched up a lot of defenses, but we didn’t do one single thing against her. In the second half we double teamed her off on-balls. That was the thing we did differently. We did better in transition defense. Last time she scored a bunch in transition and this time we tried to take that away.”

On whether Purdue played better this game:

“I think we played better. I think the transition defense was a big key because they had like 30 points in transition offense last game. I thought we were zero’ed in and we had great fight. We got some offensive boards going, but for us we shot the three ball pretty well and we haven’t done that as of late. We have to clean things up, but I thought changing defenses and them shooting under 40 percent for the game was good.”
