#1 Terps Move to 7-0 with Win Over #14 Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Led by four goals performances from senior midfielder Taylor Cummings and sophomore attacker Megan Whittle, the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team (7-0) defeated No. 14 Penn (6-2) 12-8 Wednesday evening at Franklin Field.
 
Cummings also posted 10 draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg, freshman midfielder Caroline Steele and sophomore midfielders Kacie Longo and Taylor Hensh each scored once.
 
Whittle started the scoring just 90 seconds into the game as she drove to the front of the cage and scored. Cummings added her first goal at 27:54.
 
After Penn added a goal, Whittle and Cummings scored again as the Terps took a 4-1 lead at 19:31.
 
Penn scored again at 15:36 before Maryland went on an 8-0 run. Cummings started the streak after winning a draw control and taking the ball to the cage at 15:26. Longo and Stukenberg added goals and Hensh tallied a free-position goal at 8:27 as the Terps took an 8-2 lead into halftime.
 
Steele kicked off the second-half scoring off her own rebound just 30 seconds into the half. Cummings caused a turnover in the midfield and scored at 28:31. Whittle scored the next two goals as the Terps took a 12-2 lead.
 
The Quakers finished the game with six straight goals but Maryland held Penn off to take a 12-8 win.
 
Senior defender Alice Mercer picked up four ground balls and caused one turnover. Stukenberg tallied three draw controls while junior attacker Caroline Wannen picked up two.
 
Freshman goalie Megan Taylor finished with two saves, one ground ball and one caused turnover in the win.
 
The Terps return home for the first time in three weeks this Saturday when Maryland faces James Madison at 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
