Six Terps Earn IWLCA All-Region Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six members of the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team were selected to the IWLCA All-South Region teams, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Friday.
 
Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings, senior defender Alice Mercer, sophomore attacker Megan Whittle, junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg and junior defender Nadine Hadnagy were named to the all-region first team. Freshman goalie Megan Taylor earned second team honors.
 
All six Terps have helped Maryland to a 19-0 record leading into the NCAA Tournament and the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. The six players were all unanimously selected to the All-Big Ten team last week.
 
A threat across the field, Cummings leads the Terps in points (67), ground balls (57), draw controls (124) and caused turnovers (43). She is second on goals (50) and assists (17). Cummings was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year for the second season in a row and was also selected as the Big Ten Tournament MVP. The Ellicott City, Md., native has been named an IWLCA First Team All-American in each season as a Terp.
 
Mercer leads Maryland’s defense, which ranks sixth nationally and is allowing just 6.84 goals per game. The Woodbine, Md., native has 28 ground balls, 16 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers this season. Mercer was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the Big Ten All-Tournament team.
 
Whittle paces the Terps’ potent offense, which leads the country with 15.32 goals per game. The sophomore leads the team with 61 goals this year and is second on the team with 64 points. Whittle is averaging 3.12 goals per game in her career. The Glenwood, Md., native was named Big Ten Attack Player of the Year.
 
Stukenberg has compiled 39 goals, 15 assists and 54 points this season, ranking third on the team in each category. The Ellicott City, Md., native has stepped up as a leader in the midfield and also has 23 ground balls, 34 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers this year.
 
Hadnagy has also stepped up as a leader this season, helping captain the Maryland defense that returned just two starters from last season. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native ranks second on the team with 36 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.
 
Taylor stepped into the starting role at goalie in her first season. She was selected as the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, Taylor ranks fourth nationally with a 6.41 goals-against average and also has a .474 save percentage. The Glenelg, Md., native was one of just six freshmen to earn all-region honors.
 
The IWLCA named 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2016. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Wednesday May 18. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on Saturday June 4, 2016 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
