• The No. 2 Maryland women’s lacrosse team will face its second top-ten opponent in three days, hosting No. 4 James Madison for its annual Diabetes Awareness Game on Saturday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

• For the fourth consecutive season, the Terps will raise money and wear blue warmups for one game to raise awareness for Type 1 diabetes.

•  Head coach Cathy Reese’s oldest son, Riley, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In the three seasons combined, the Terps have raised more than $42,000 for the cause.

NOTABLE TIDBITS

• Maryland heads into this weekend’s contest with a 7-1 record and No. 4/2 ranking with road wins over top-ten ranked Florida, Syracuse and Penn as well as home victories over William & Mary, UMBC & Hofstra. The Terps one loss came to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Terps are also 1-0 in Big Ten play, with a win over Johns Hopkins

• Senior attacker Megan Whittle (33 goals, eight assists) leads the team with 41 points, while junior midfielder Jen Giles (23 goals, 10 assists) stands right behind her with 33. Whittle leads the Big Ten in many offensive categories, including goals per game (4.14), points per game (5.14) and free position percentage (82.6%) and leads the country in free position goals per game with 2.71, after scoring a career-best six against UMBC. Giles is second in the conference in points per game (4.14), while leading the league in shot percentage (57.1%) and ranking third in free position goals per game (1.14).

• Taking advantage of a strong start that saw the Terps lead 5-0 midway through the first half, the No. 2 Maryland women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 8 Penn 13-7 at Frankin Field on Thursday afternoon.

• The Terps offense was led all day by the trio of Megan Whittle, Jen Giles and Caroline Steele. Maryland’s three season-leading goal scorers got the Terps started on the right foot, combining for five goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest to give their team a 5-0 lead.

• Goalie Megan Taylor was strong in goal all afternoon, posting her highest save percentage of the season at .650. Taylor tied a season-high with 13 saves, seven in the first half and six in the second. The junior also totaled a season-best three groundballs.

• No. 4 James Madison is undefeated this season at 8-0, holding a #4 ranking. The Dukes defeated Richmond, 14-9 in their last contest.

• Kristen Gaudien and Elena Romesburg lead the Dukes' offense with 32 and 28 goals apiece.

• Maryland leads the all-time series with Johns Hopkins, 40-3.

• The two programs met last season in Harrisonburg, with the No. 1 Terps defeating the Dukes, 16-11. Megan Whittle, Caroline Steele and Kali Hartshorn each scored three goals while Megan Taylor made seven saves in 45 minutes.

WHITTLE climbing up the all-time goal ranks

• In just seven games this season, Megan Whittle has jumped from six to two in the Maryland women's lacrosse all-time goal ranks, tallying 33 goals. 

• The senior attacker now has 247 goals in her career, passing Maryland greats Taylor Cummings and Karri Ellen Johnson on her path to the all-time lead this season. Whittle is just 21 goals behind Jen Adams (1998-01) for the all-time lead at 267.

STEELE CITY

• Junior attacker Caroline Steele has been on a tear over the past two games, leading the Terps in both points and goals in wins over #8 Syracuse and RV/#24 Johns Hopkins.

• Against the Orange, Steele tallied a career-best seven points with five goals and two assists. Steele then followed that up, with a four goal, one assist game against Hopkins the following week.

• The junior now stands second on the team in both goals (20) and assist (seven), while ranking third in points (27).

CONTROLLING THE DRAW

• As a team, Maryland is fourth in the nation and leads the Big Ten in draw controls per game, with 17.71. The duo of Kali Hartshorn and Meghan Siverson have been key to giving Maryland possession.

• Against UNC (2/24), Hartshorn posted a career-best 12 draw controls. Siverson followed that up with a career-high of her own, 13 draw controls against UMBC (2/28). The following game against Hofstra, Hartshorn and Siverson combined for 15 draw controls. At #8 Syracuse, Maryland won the draw control battle 22-8, with Siverson and Hartshorn combining for 13. 

• Maryland has 124 draw controls as a team through seven games, with Siverson and Hartshorn combining for 71 of those (57.3%).

TEWAARATON TERPS 

• The Terps had five players named to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on March 1.  

 Megan Whittle and a quartet of juniors: Julia Braig, Jen Giles, Caroline Steele and Megan Taylor were all selected for the watch list.

• Whittle has now been selected for the Tewaaraton Watch List in three straight seasons. It’s the second appearance for Taylor, while Braig, Giles and Steele are all on the list for the first time.  

• Maryland has won won six straight Tewaaraton Awards and seven of the last eight. 

terps Rack Up B1G Honors

• Maryland has had a player win a Big Ten weekly honor in four of the first six weeks of the season. 

• Sophomore defender Lizzie Colson has won a trio of Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards thus far in 2018. 

• Colson was a big part of Maryland's defense that didn't allow a goal to William & Mary until the 12:40 mark of the opening half, tying for the team lead in both caused turnovers (2) and groundballs (2). She also ranked second on the team with three draw control wins. Colson then tied for the team-lead with four groundballs in the two wins over UMBC and Hofstra, while also notching seven draw controls and one caused turnover.

• At RV/#24 Johns Hopkins this past weekend, Colson filled up the stat sheet in this past Saturday's win at RV/#24 Johns Hopkins, leading the team and setting career-highs in draw controls (five), groundballs (four) and caused turnovers (three). On the season, the sophomore leads the Terps with 16 groundballs and nine caused turnovers.

• Senior attacker Megan Whittle was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice in this young season. 

• Against #5/3 Florida (2/17), Whittle scored three straight goals in a 1:29 span to put the game out of reach. She was 3-for-4 on 8-meter shots and also led the Terps with five draw controls. In a pair of home wins over UMBC and Hofstra, Whittle totaled a team-best 14 points (12 goals, two assists) on just 20 shots on goal, including a nine-for-10 mark on free position shots. 

• Whittle has now racked up 10 Big Ten Weekly honors of her career. 

Top Ten SUCCESS

• #4 James Madison is the second top-ten foe of the week for Maryland, after the Terps defeated #8 Penn 13-7 on Wednesday.

• This season, Maryland is 3-1 against top-ten foes, while over the past four seasons, the Terps hold an incredible 23-2 record against teams in the top ten in each of the major polls.
