Participation in the Terps Leadership Academy provides student-athletes an opportunity to learn about and improve leadership skills in the classroom, on their team, and within the community.
TERPS Leadership Academy
A series of seminars that provide student-athletes an opportunity to achieve their potential by gaining knowledge and practicing effective leadership skills in the areas of team building, relationship building, effective communication and conflict management All leadership seminars teach valuable insights that transition into a “real world” environment.
The TERP Leadership Academy is designed to assist student-athletes:
- Understand the concepts of effective leadership and followership
- Assess their personal leadership style
- Recognize the importance of positive team culture
- Practice what they’ve learned by hosting a Junior Leadership Workshop
Leadership Council 1: “Developing Personal Leadership”
This seminar focuses on “leading from the inside out (understanding leadership)” and assists participants:
- Define leadership
- Identify various styles of leadership
- Understand effective leadership and followership traits
Leadership Council 2: “Success Strategies for Fostering Influence”
This seminar focuses on “student leadership practices” and assists participants:
- Identify their personal leadership style
- Assess their leaderships skills
- Determine actions that will improve their leadership skills
Leadership Council 3: “Leadership & Effective Team Building"
This seminar focuses on “team dynamics and conflict resolution” and assists participants:
- Understand team dynamics and conflict management styles
- Evaluate positive team culture
- Identify strategies to manage conflict and improve team culture
Leadership Council 4: “Leadership and Empowerment”
This seminar focuses on “empowering others to lead” by:
- Teaching younger students’ important leadership information
- Providing student-athlete leadership mentors the opportunity to gain practical experience.
