Prospects
If you are interested in being a student-athlete at Maryland, or you are the parent of a potential student-athlete, there are several things that you should know about NCAA eligibility requirements and the recruitment process. TheÂ
2019-20 Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete is a good starting point.
Every prospective student-athlete who is attending an NCAA Division I institution full-time for the first time must be certified academically and as an amateur by the NCAA Eligibility Center (College-bound student-athletes should register at the beginning of their junior year in high school and may do so by clicking
here).
The NCAA Eligibility Center has created a checklist that should be read before registering.
All prospective student-athletes must report their SAT and/or ACT scores to the Eligibility Center. Therefore, when registering for the SAT or ACT, you should input the code 9999 to make sure that the score is reported directly to the Eligibility Center. Additionally, if you are interested in attending Maryland, you should input the code 1746 for the ACT and 5814 for the SAT.
International Students
Any prospective student-athlete who completes secondary or post-secondary education outside the United States is considered an international student. For those individuals, the Guide to International Academic Standards for Athletics Eligibility should be reviewed. Additionally, if you are a prospective student-athlete who was educated in a country or province in which English is not the only official language, you may be required to complete and submit the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Transfer Students
Any student-athlete interested in transferring to Maryland from another NCAA member institution must appear on the transfer portal or obtain permission to contact from their current or previous institution's athletics compliance department, or director of athletics, prior to communicating with Maryland coaches or athletics department personnel.
Information for Prospective Student-Athletes
So you are aware, NCAA rules and regulations prohibit coaches and administrative personnel from sending letters or electronic mail to high school students until after September 1 of their junior year in high school. While we are not permitted to write or e-mail high school students if they are not eligible per the above restriction, high school students are permitted to telephone coaches and administrators prior to the completion of their junior year in high school, but only at the high school student's expense.
Â
Prospective student-athletes are also permitted to contact the admissions office for information regarding the University of Maryland and its academic programs at any time. You may call our admissions office at (301) 314-8385 or submit a request form.
Â
WARNING: If you are a student-athlete enrolled at another four-year institution or if you have been enrolled at another four-year institution in the last year (Division I, II or III), NCAA rules and regulations strictly prohibit us from having any communication with you, directly or indirectly, until that institution grants our institution permission to contact you. You may obtain this permission to contact at the compliance office of your current or previous institution.
Notification of Transfer
NCAA legislation states that an athletics staff member (e.g. coach) or other representative of athletics interests shall not make contact, directly or indirectly, with a student at any NCAA Division I institution without first obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process. Therefore, a student-athlete who wishes to speak with another school about the possibility of transferring away from the University of Maryland must:
- Speak with your coach(es) about your intention to transfer.
- Send an email to a member of the Compliance Office requesting that your name and contact information be entered into the national transfer database so other colleges/universities may have contact with you. Be sure to include your current contact information.
- Upon receipt of that email, the Compliance Office will notify the student-athlete’s head coach and will enter the student-athlete’s information into the national transfer database within two (2) business days.
The institution shall conduct the hearing and provide written results of the hearing to the student-athlete within 15 business days of receipt of the student-athlete’s written request for a hearing. The student-athlete shall be provided the opportunity to participate actively in the hearing.
