Brian Griffin was named Chief of Staff for the Maryland football program in July 2023.
In this role, he supports Head Coach Michael Locksley in managing the coaching staff, student-athletes, and support personnel to enhance overall performance. His responsibilities include player recruiting, roster management, NIL strategy, player development, academic monitoring, football operations, and maintaining team discipline and culture.
Griffin is heavily involved in all aspects of the program, particularly in scouting (high school & college), recruiting, marketing, coaching strategy, budget management, staff oversight, and mentoring assistant coaches and operational staff. He also assists in establishing and enforcing team rules, overseeing player development initiatives, and managing roster and NIL-related fundraising efforts.
Before joining Maryland, Griffin was the Director of Coaching Operations for the Atlanta Falcons (2021-23), working directly with Head Coach Arthur Smith. He managed NFL rules and protocols, football operations, nutrition, strength & conditioning, video, game-day logistics, and analytics. He collaborated with the coaching staff and personnel department on salary cap management, roster building, team culture, scouting, free agency, the draft, situational football, and performance programming.
Prior to the Falcons, Griffin served as the Director of Football at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., in 2020 where he managed all activities for the football program including annual planning, program development, academic affairs, student-life, facility planning, scheduling, performance training and athletic and personal development.
Prior to IMG Academy, Griffin served as the Director of Athletics, Department Chair and Head of Athletic Development at St. John's College High School in Washington DC for six years (2014-19). In his role, Griffin was responsible for organizing, managing and executing all aspects of the athletics program which included 29 varsity sports.
Griffin also spent three years (2011-13) as the Vice President of Performance and President of Training Division at IMG Performance in Bradenton, Fla. He also spent four years (2007-10) as the Senior Director of Performance, Combines, Camps & Clinics for Under Armour.
A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Griffin earned his bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. There he was a linebacker on the varsity football team, a two-time defensive captain and the recipient of the Edgar Church Memorial Award, which is presented to the student-athlete rendering the most outstanding contributions to the varsity team based on the inspiration, courage and loyalty displayed toward the university and the team. Additionally, he earned his master's degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University and is a certified performance training coach.
