Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development Resa Lovelace announced the hiring of Nate McGill as the new Program Director for Student-Athlete Career Development for the Maryland Made unit, in August 2022.
McGill comes to College Park after serving as the Director of the “R” Association and the Assistant Director of SOAR at Rice University. McGill spent the past year assisting with developing and implementing a four-year personal and professional development program at Rice called the “Flight Plan.”
At Maryland, McGill will oversee all of the Career Readiness programs, including the Barry and Mary Gossett Fellows program for junior and senior student-athletes, and the InTERPship Academy, an 8-week internship program for all student-athletes to explore their professional possibilities. In addition, he will be working with the Worldwide Terp student group that represents all of the International student-athletes, while building our relationship with the International Students and Scholars Services office. As the Program Director, he will collaborate with the University Career Center and the various Program Directors centered in the colleges on campus.
“I am excited to welcome Nate to join the Maryland Made team,” Lovelace said. “I believe that his experience will continue assisting us in elevating our Career Readiness programs, which include building long standing relationships with external organizations to help our student-athletes gain employment and graduate school opportunities after their collegiate athletic experience.”
Through his work at Rice, McGill oversaw the planning and execution of over 30 private and public alumni-targeted events. He worked closely with on-campus departments, internal personnel, external partners, sport-specific interest groups, and donors to produce programming for student-athletes and alumni.
"It's an amazing time to be a Maryland Terrapin and I couldn't be more excited to be joining the University of Maryland Athletics Department, within the Maryland Made Student-Athlete Development Program,” McGill said. “I am elated to have been provided the opportunity to serve this diverse student-athlete population, while helping them reach their greatest potential, by supporting them throughout their matriculation at the university and beyond graduation."
Prior to his time at Rice, McGill was an assistant academic advisor for football at UTSA. While working on his Master’s of Education at Georgia State, McGill was a graduate assistant with the Life Skills unit and worked in student-athlete development and academics.
McGill served on the Black Student-Athlete Summit Event Staff in May 2022 and was a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor at Rice. McGill has also served on the Black Leadership Association for Athletes, Administrators, and Coaches, and N4A: Ethics Concerns Committee Leadership Team. He is an alumnus of the NCAA Emerging Leader Seminar.
