CJ Oates was named an assistant director at the University of Maryland in July 2019. In addition to monitoring the academic progress for men's soccer, women's basketball, and women's tennis student-athletes, he also assists in the oversight of the continuing eligibility certification for all student-athletes.
Oates most recently served as athletic academic counselor for football at the University of Maryland from 2016-19. Before his time at the University of Maryland, he served as an academic coordinator for football at Northern Illinois University from 2014-16. His responsibilities included supervision of new student-athlete orientation. He also co-produced the annual student-athlete handbook and taught UNIV 101, University Freshman Experience course. He got his start working in academic services at the University of Oklahoma as an Academic Mentor.

Oates received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in sport management from Campbell University in 2011, where he competed as a football student-athlete. He then completed a master's degree in adult and higher education with a concentration in intercollegiate athletics administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2014.
He is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) and is also a member of the Legislative Affairs Committee.
