Stephen D. Travers currently serves as a sprint coach for the University of Maryland College Park, and has been in this volunteer position for the past four years.
His coaching career has spanned over four decades beginning in the 1980's when he was a track coach for the Catholic Youth Organization at St. Mark's the Evangelist School in Adelphi, Maryland. Additionally, while at St. Mark's he coached his own summer track team, Travers Track Club that participated over the years in the East Coast Invitational Track Meet and many other regional events.
A long time Track and Field enthusiast, Coach Travers has coached a countless number of athletes to District, Regional, State, and National Championships; As well as athletes who have received full scholarships to some of the best colleges and universities in the nation. A longtime assistant track coach at Washington D.C. powerhouse HD Woodson Sr. High School, he was both a coach and father figure to some of the most talented athletes in the city. Using his vast knowledge of speed endurance/techniques and motivation, Coach Travers has been able to get athletes to excel far beyond their perceived self-imposed limits. During his tenure, Coach Travers served as the sprints and jumps coach, strength and conditioning coordinator while developing several record breaking student-athletes.
While coaching, Coach travers was also a career law enforcement officer for the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Department (MPDC), and has been a coach and technical advisor to police officers training to participate in the World Police and Fire Games, the Penn Relays, and other national and international events.
Coach Travers is a member of U.S. Track and Field, and the USTFCCCA. He is a retired lieutenant of the MPDC, and a former Special Deputy with the U.S. Marshall Service and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He is married to his wife Nicki, and has two daughters (Stephanie and Shane) and two grandsons (Santana and Santiago).
