ATLANTA, GA. - Maja Pachale smashed a match-high 22 kills, leading Georgia Tech (14-10, 4-7 ACC) to a 15-9, 15-9, 15-13 win over Maryland (11-15, 4-8 ACC) in volleyball action tonight at O'Keefe Gymnasium. The match marked the first of a five-match road trip for Maryland.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead, prompting the Terps to call a time out. From there, however, Maryland rallied to tie the game at 7-7. Following a Yellow Jacket time out, the home team went on an 8-2 run to clinch the first game 15-9.
In the second game, Maryland jumped out to a 7-4 lead but the Yellow Jackets rebounded to take a 9-7 edge, forcing Maryland to call a time out. Georgia Tech kept right on rolling following the time out, outscoring Maryland 6-2, on its way to another 15-9 triumph.
The Terrapins once again jumped out to a quick lead in the third game, bolting out to a 7-2 advantage. Maryland stretched the lead to 10-2, but Georgia Tech scored five straight points to trim the deficit to 10-7. Following a Maryland time out, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-3 run to seal the match with a 15-13 win.
Courtney Adler of Georgia Tech posted a match-high 49 assists, Teryl Townsend posted 14 kills and Ky Bell added 13 kills.
For the Terps, Kate Hannas posted a team-high nine kills and Libby Alberts dished out 30 assists.
Maryland continues its schedule on Saturday as it travels to Clemson for a 6 p.m. contest.
