CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After a heart-breaking loss to Duke on Sunday, the North Carolina volleyball team bounced back in a big way Tuesday sweeping Maryland (15-1, 15-11, 15-4) in Carmichael Auditorium. The win improved UNC's record to 22-5, 12-2 in the ACC.
Seniors Tori Seibert and Shannon Smith led the way for Carolina delivering 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Both players also hit for a high percentage as Seibert had only three errors on 17 attempts for .529 and Smith had only four errors on 20 attempts for .364. Freshmen Malaika Underwood and Eve Rackham each contributed a match-high 11 digs, and also each had four kills.
Game one was won easily by the Tar Heels. They opened up with a 6-0 lead and never looked back for the 15-1 win. Carolina out-hit Maryland .389 to -.083 in the game.
Game two was closer, as UNC again jumped out to an early lead at 6-1. However, Maryland fought back to reach within 7-5. Carolina then scored three unanswered points to take a 10-5 lead, and eventually lengthened that lead to 14-6. Maryland made one last charge to pull to 14-11 before the Tar Heels won the game 15-11.
In game three, UNC started with three consecutive points for a 3-0 lead, but the Terps answered with three of their own to tie it. The score was 5-4 in favor of the Tar Heels when Carolina went on a 10-0 run to close out the game and the match.
Beth Murphy led the Terrapins with seven kills and ten digs, followed by Carey Brennan who tallied six kills and eight digs. In the match, UNC out-hit Maryland .279 to .097. With the loss, Maryland falls to 12-17 overall, 5-10 in the ACC.
Carolina will close out the regular season with home matches against Florida State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Virginia on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
