Head Coach: Tom Hanna (Maryland OE71) Ninth season at Maryland
HEAD COACH
Maryland men's head golf coach Tom Hanna has more than 25 years of
experience in the golf business, both as a coach and as a competitor.
Over the past eight years, Hanna has taken a little known, underfunded program and transformed it into a highly recognized contender which has some of the best up-and-coming talent in the ACC. This, along with the expertise that he brings to the program, will be the spark that get the Terps back along the path that will lead to success in both the ACC and nationally.
Originally from Lock Haven, Pa., Hanna is no stranger to success when it comes to golf. In his collegiate days with the Terps, Hanna competed in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Following his collegiate playing days, he then moved on to compete on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour. After a brief stint in the PGA, Hanna continued to rack up state and local titles in the Philadelphia section of the PGA. After his time competing there, Hanna remained on the East Coast, gaining extensive experience as a head professional at several prestigious country clubs. He spent three years at Lock Haven Country Club in Lock Haven, Pa., before taking the head professional job at Centre Hills Country Club in State College, Pa., from 1977-84. From 1985-90, Hanna was the director of golf at the Harbour Towne Golf Course in St. Michaels, Md. In 1991, he returned to his alma mater to take over the reigns of the Maryland men's golf program. Since then, Hanna has steadily improved the golf program. In 1994, the Terps finished fifth at the ACC Championships, their highest finish since 1978. This resulted in Hanna earning ACC Coach of the Year honors. Also, in 1991 Hanna was named the director of the Maryland golf course, a job in which he exerted just as much energy as with the golf team. Hanna helped transform the Maryland golf course into one of the nicest, cleanest, and most popular courses in the area that is used on an annual basis to host numerous local high school golf championships. He recently relinquished his course director duties, but remains heavily involved in ensuring that it remains one of the top courses in the area. Hanna also directs several summer golf camps at the University of Maryland.
Hanna graduated from the University of Maryland in 1971 and received his B.S. in physical education. Hanna and his wife, Kathy, have three children: Betsi, Thomas III, and Jessica.
SEASON PREVIEW
During the past fall, the Maryland golf team placed in the top five in four of its five tournaments. This spring, more of the same is expected. Head coach Tom Hanna has revived the Maryland golf program in recent years, and is continuing to raise it to the highest collegiate level. After losing only one individual from the fall, Hanna will rely on the experience of six upperclassmen, including three seniors, and the addition of a highly touted freshman this spring to lead the Terps to continued success.
The Terps enter the spring season ranked No. 35 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings after an extremely successful fall and will compete in seven regular season tournaments, including the ACC Championships, before heading to the regional and national championships. In these tournaments, Maryland expects to employ a starting five comprised of three seniors and two juniors, all of whom bring heavy competition experience and the drive to constantly improve their games. Senior-co captains Pete Coughlin, Mike Deo and Miguel Rivera are likely to see action in every meet along with juniors Keith Unikel and Gary Mankulish. Coughlin, a two-time captain and three-year letterwinner, competed in one tournament last fall, the Duke Golf Classic, and recorded a 15-over par score of 231. Despite limited playing time last fall, Coughlin is the team's vocal leader both on and off the field and provides much of the drive that has put the Terrapins where they are today.
Deo, meanwhile, has been one of the Terps' most improved golfers over the past three years. Last year he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships. In the fall, Deo recorded his best outing at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic, where he scored two rounds of sub-par play to finish with a one-over par 214, tying him for 18th place overall. Deo is one of the focal points of the Terps' game this season and a major threat to all other teams.
Maryland's top two golfers, however, are by far Rivera and Unikel. Both are extremely skilled in all areas of the game and the duo has proven to be extremely dangerous when they are at their peak performance. They are recognized as two of the best up-and-coming golfers in the conference and the nation, and have the ability to win any tournament in which they participate. Rivera, a two-time captain, finished the 1998 fall with a 72.45 average, second only to Unikel. He shot sub-par rounds on four occasions, including twice in the 60's. Rivera finished in the top 10 at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic, shooting a fall-best four-under par 209, tying for fifth place overall. Expect to see Rivera make a name for himself this spring among the nation's elite college golfers.
Along with Rivera, Keith Unikel is one of Maryland's most talented golfers. Unikel became the youngest winner of the Maryland Open this past summer and made national headlines in doing so. He was also a medalist at the 1998 Maryland Amateur Championship. Last fall, he was the Terps' most consistent golfer, leading the team in stroke average (72.35), sub-par rounds played (eight), rounds played in the 60's (three), and top 10 finishes (two). He was also the Terps' top golfer in four of their five tournaments. Unikel's best outing of the fall came at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate where he finished second and led the Terps to a second place finish with a five-under par 211. With another year to fine tune his skills, Unikel anticipates making the jump
from the collegiate level to the professional circuit with a strong
arsenal of weapons and a very good head for the game. The Terps also expect good things from junior Gary Mankulish, who along with Unikel, is expected to start taking the reigns as a team leader. Mankulish recorded the team's best round last fall with a 65 at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate where he finished in 17th place with a season best four-over par score of 220. Mankulish is the Terps' longest driver and has the ability to perform extremely well and compete with anyone in the nation.
These five individuals compose the core of the Terrapin lineup. However, there are three solid golfers in reserve if Maryland should ever require their services. They are junior Ben Ricker, sophomore Doug Wade and freshman Brit Musser. All three bring with them numerous accolades and extensive experience both prior to and during their time at Maryland. If these three individuals can come into the rotation at a moment's notice and perform at the expected levels, the Terps should contend in every tournament.
Maryland golf has the potential to be one of the best in the ACC this spring and the Terps are determined to prove that they are not to be taken lightly.

1998 Fall Review
If the fall 1998 season is any prelude to the 1999 spring season, then the Terps can be expected to be one of the top teams in the conference. In the fall, Maryland competed in five tournaments and placed in the top five four times. Included were a first place finish at the Palmetto Classic, a second place finish at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate, a third place finish at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic and a fifth place finish at the ODU/Seascape Collegiate Golf Tournament. The Terps' finish at the Keswick Cavalier Classic included a fall best team score of four-under par 848.
Leading the way for Maryland was Keith Unikel, who was the Terps' top finisher in four of Maryland's five meets. This included two finishes in the top five and one in the top 15. In Maryland's first tournament of the fall, the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate, Unikel recorded a personal and team fall best score of five-under par 211, taking second place overall. He also tied with two other golfers for the team's second best score of the fall, the ODU/Seascape Collegiate Golf Tournament, with a four-under par 140 placing him fifth. After Unikel, co-captain Miguel Rivera was the Terps' most consistent performer. In the four meets that he took part in, Rivera was Maryland's second best finisher on three occasions. In two of those, the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate and the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic, Rivera placed 13th and fifth, respectively. At the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic, he also recorded a personal best and team fall second best score of four-under par 209, tying him for fifth with teammate Ed Flowerdew, who was also impressive in his last season with the golf program.
Flowerdew competed in all five of the Terps' tournaments and recorded his best outing at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic. He was Maryland's top finisher in the tournament, along with Rivera, recording a four-under par 209 and tying for fifth place. Flowerdew also placed 13th at the Palmetto Classic, recording a three-over par score of 219. This past fall, the Terps peaked in the national rankings at No. 6 and made the nation take notice. If Maryland can keep its game at the level it exhibited in the fall, the Terps can expected to be seen playing in the NCAA Tournament come the end of the spring.

1998 Spring Review
The Terps' golf program came into the spring season looking to improve and improve it did. Excluding the ACC Championships, it finished seventh or higher in the last four tournaments. The Pepsi Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek began the turnaround for Maryland as it took the team title with a three-under par 861 and placed three individuals in the top 20. After placing seventh at the Furman Invitational, the Terps then finished in third place at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State University Invitational. After a disappointing performance at the ACC Championships, the Terps closed out the spring on a high note with a spring best score of nine-under par 855, earning them second place overall.
Among the Terrapin golfers, the duo of Keith Unikel and Miguel Rivera provided much of the production for Maryland. Rivera and Unikel finished as the top two Terp golfers in five of Maryland's seven tournaments. Rivera's best outing of the spring came at the ACC Championships where he finished tied for 11th place with a four-under par 212. Unikel's best outing came in the last tournament of the spring, the Wofford Invitational, where he shot a three-under par 213 to finish tied for ninth. Unikel recorded at least one round of 60 in each of the last four tournaments.
Also making a major contribution to the Terps was Mike Deo, who was Maryland's third highest finisher in four of the Terps' seven tournaments. He recorded a season best two-over par 218 at the Pepsi Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek. Ed Flowerdew also added production to the Terps' overall game with his best performance of the season coming in the last tournament of the spring, the Wofford Invitational. Flowerdew led all Terp golfers, finishing with a team and personal spring best four-under par, placing in a tie for fifth.
