MARIETTA, Ga. - Maryland senior pitcher Kelly Shipman came within one out of her fourth career no-hitter and finished the game with a one-hit shutout victory, 2-0, over Evansville at Al Bishop Softball Complex here this afternoon. The Terps finished pool play in the Buzz Classic with a perfect 4-0 record and will be one of the top five seeds when championship play begins Sunday morning at 8 am.
Maryland has won five consecutive games and has a record of 24-15. The Terps did not win their 24th game last season until April 24.
In winning her second game in two days, Shipman raised her season record to 12-9. She has nearly matched her victory total (13) from the 1998 season and has won an ongoing school-record 66 career games. Shipman now has six shutouts this season which ranks as the fourth best single-season total in school history and 38 career shutouts which stands as the ongoing school record. Shipman struck out seven batters on the day.
Sophomore Michelle Burrell earned the game winning RBI in the fourth inning as she plated firstbaseman Kiesha Pickeral with a sacrifice fly. Pickeral had earlier doubled. Sophomore leftfielder Jen Potzman scored the Terps' second run on a passed ball in the top of the sixth inning.
