Men's Cross Country

  • Swept competition at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational
  • Finished in the top three in three separate meets

  • Captured the team title at the Maryland Invitational

    Field Hockey (16-6)

  • Captured ACC title by upsetting top-ranked Virginia in overtime
  • Advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season
  • Missy Meharg named ACC Coach of the Year for the third time

    Football (3-8)

  • Made across-the-board scoring and statistical improvements against virtually every ACC opponent compared to 1997
  • Terps had nation's sixth most-improved rushing offense and 12th most-improved total defense in 98
  • Linebackers Eric Barton and Kendall Ogle, both NFL draft picks, ranked 1-2 in the ACC in total tackles

    Men's Soccer (16-8)

  • Advanced to NCAA Final Four for the first time since 1969
  • Finished the season with a record of 16-8, equaling school mark for wins
  • Taylor Twellman named Soccer America Freshman of the Year
  • Only school to advance to second round of NCAA Tournament each of last five years
  • Signed national high school player of the year

    Women's Soccer (11-11-1)

  • Selected to NCAA Tournament for school-record fourth consecutive season
  • Advanced to the NCAA second round for third time in past four years
  • A school-record five players earned All-ACC recognition

    Volleyball (13-16)

  • Advanced to the second round of the ACC Tournament

    Men's Basketball (28-6)

  • Rated among the nation's top 10 teams for all 18 weeks of the 1998-99 season
  • Won a school-record 28 games overall and school-record 13 ACC games
  • Finished fifth in final AP poll, highest final ranking since 1975
  • Played in a school-record sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and reached Sweet 16 for fourth time in last six years
  • Guard Steve Francis named college Newcomer of the Year by Sports Illustrated

    Women's Basketball (6-21)

  • After difficult start without a pair of experienced starters, Maryland improved nearly 100 spots in national RPI ratings
  • Deedee Warley became just fourth freshman in school history to lead the team in scoring and was within two votes of being named ACC Freshman of the Year

    Gymnastics (29-13)

  • Enjoyed best season in school history, setting a school record with 29 victories
  • Ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation and finished season ranked No. 14
  • Advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season

    Men's Swimming (8-3)

  • Clinched fourth consecutive winning season by posting a record of 8-3
  • Kevin Burke named ACC Diver of the Year for the second consecutive season
  • Kevin Burke advanced to NCAA Championships for second consecutive season

    Women's Swimming (9-1)

  • Set school record by sending four individuals to the NCAA Championships
  • Terps registered a third-place finish at ACC Championships, their highest ever
  • Maryland earned first-ever national ranking in early March (No. 24)

    Wrestling (7-4)

  • Finished season with an overall record of 7-4 (2-2 in ACC)
  • Redshirt freshman Brandon York captured ACC title at 133 pounds and advanced to the NCAA Tournament

    Baseball (22-31-1)

  • Eight-game win streak from March 31-April 9 longest in 19 seasons
  • Recorded first-ever road sweep of an ACC team (at Duke)

    Golf

  • Terps ranked as high as 25th in major collegiate golf poll as of mid-April
  • Advanced to NCAA Regionals for first time since 1994

    Men's Lacrosse (9-5)

  • Senior Scott Hochstadt became 10th player in school history to score 100 career goals
  • Ranked among the nation's top 11 teams all season

    Women's Lacrosse (21-0)

  • Captured unprecedented fifth consecutive national championship
  • Ranked No. 1 entire season
  • Posted 96-4 record over last five seasons
  • Captured the 1999 ACC Championship

    Softball (48-21)

  • School record for wins
  • Earned first Top 25 ranking in school history
  • Clinched share of ACC regular-season title
  • Earned automatic bid to NCAA Tournament

    Men's Tennis (4-10)

  • Opened the season with three consecutive victories
  • Posted a 4-1 record vs. non-ACC opponents

    Women's Tennis (12-8)

  • Terps have posted their best record since 1989, when they were 13-6
  • Duo of Meg Griffin/Lorraine Bittles selected to NCAA Championships
  • Maryland advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third consecutive year

    Men's Track

  • Ranked 44th nationally in outdoor dual meet rankings as of mid-April
  • Qualified for IC4A Indoor Championships

    Women's Track

  • Fifth-place ACC finish at outdoor meet was the Terps' highest since 1988
  • Maryland finished 13th nationally in indoor dual meet rankings and is ranked 22nd in mid-May outdoor national rankings

    National Title for Maryland Cheerleaders
    The University of Maryland's all-female cheerleading squad claimed the National Cheerleading Association national collegiate title at a competition in Daytona Beach. Fla., in early April. Maryland placed first in the all-female Division I category, finishing ahead of Florida State, Oklahoma and Louisville.

    Three Earn ACC Postgraduate Scholarships
    No ACC school had more Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Awards in 1999 than Maryland, which totaled three recipients: volleyball player Eden Kroeger, football player Ryan Rezzelle, and women's soccer player Keri Sarver. Each scholar-athlete receives $5,000 to use toward their graduate education.

    Women's Golf Tees it Up in '99
    Maryland will unveil its 25th varsity sport this fall when the Terps field a women's golf team under the direction of head coach Jason Rodenhaver. Rodenhaver, a former Terp standout who participated in the NCAA East Regionals as an undergraduate, assumes the reins of the program after serving as an assistant coach of the men's golf team since 1995.

    Community Service
    Once again, more than 50 Maryland student-athletes brought inspiring messages to more than 70 metropolitan schools and more than 15,000 area students through group presentations and mentoring. Called "Team Maryland," this community service outreach program is the only academically sanctioned outreach program for student-athletes in the country.
