COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland senior midfielder Keith Beach moved into second place all-time on Marylands career assist chart after scoring three assists in Marylands 6-1 win over UMBC on Wednesday. Beach now has 22 career assists, and is four shy of breaking the all-time record, which is held by Eberhard Klein, who has 25 career assists. Beach surpassed Shane Dougherty who posted 21 career assists.
MARYLAND ROLLS PAST UMBC
Maryland freshman forward Taylor Twellman scored a career-high two goals and Keith Beach added three assists in the Terrapins 6-1 win against the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday evening at Ludwig Field. The six Terp goals set a new Ludwig Field record, which was previously five goals, scored against Robert Morris on Oct. 20, 1996.
Freshman Beckett Hollenbach put the Terps on the board early in the first half, scoring off a Jason Cropley shot, which rebounded right to the feet of Hollenbach. UMBC would score its lone goal of the evening at the 21-minute mark when Ryan Cuomo shot a header off a cross shot from Matt Gormley. Maryland sophomore Rob Birch closed out the first half scoring off a Keith Beach-assisted ball to the lower left side of the net.
Twellman scored twice in the second half, with his first goal coming at the 39 minute mark. He would also score the final goal of the game at the 85 minute mark off a Randy Merkel-Kirk Miller assisted ball. Other goal scorers for Maryland included Steve Armas (50:21) and Pierre Venditti (70:51).
In goal, Marylands Christian Lewis totaled two saves while allowing the one goal. UMBCs Mike Griffith recorded eight saves in 90 minutes.
TWELLMAN TICKS
On his first collegiate goal scored against UMBC: "Basically, I was in the right place at the right time. We played a long ball, their player headed it, the ball landed near me, and I just got the ball and was fortunate enough to put the ball in the back of the net."
On his teams performance against UMBC: "Our midfield played real well, our backs played real well, and our goals were a result of people working hard in the back and in the midfield. They were giving us (the forwards) good balls."

BEACH BITS
On his previous five matches with the Cavaliers: "Theyve been fairly even games. We havent given up scoring chances, and we havent gotten chances. The deciding factor has been finishing off the chances."
YOUNG GUNS
The Cavaliers carry only four seniors and three juniors, and are about as young as Maryland, who carries four seniors and two juniors. The Cavs lost three of their top four scorers from last season: Ben Olsen, Matt Leonard and Brian West, as well as 1997 first team All-ACC selection Scott Vermillion. Unlike Virginia, Maryland lost all of its guns on defense from a year ago, including Leo Cullen who was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 1998 MLS draft by the Miami Fusion. Also gone from the back is Joe Marshburn and R.T. Moore, and goalkeeper Andy Kirk.
THE MARYLAND MIDFIELD
The Terrapins should hold an advantage in the midfield against the Cavaliers. The Terps senior trio of Steve Armas, Keith Beach and Randy Merkel will go against a deep but shuffled Cavalier midfield. The Cavaliers play largely depends on where sophomores Chris Albright and Ryan Trout line up.
MARYLAND HEAD COACH SASHO CIROVSKI
Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski is in his sixth season at the helm of the Terrapin program. He owns a 62-39-8 record with the Terps, and in his eight years of coaching, he owns an 88-51-14 record.
