Terps Drop Two in Opening Round at Fiesta Bowl Tourney

February 13, 1999

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Maryland softball team dropped its first two opening-round games on Friday at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. The Terps dropped their first game against Nebraska, 3-1, and fell in the nightcap to UCLA, 11-0.

Maryland is scheduled to face Alabama(9 a.m.), Arizona (3:30 p.m.) and South Carolina (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday. Maryland concludes play on Sunday, facing Utah (10 a.m.) and Georgia (noon).

In Friday's opener, senior pitcher Kelly Shipman fell to 0-3 on the season after the loss to the Cornhuskers. The Terps actually led 1-0 when junior Cortney Madea recorded an RBI-double to drive in sophomore Jennifer Potzman. However, three Maryland errors would deny Shipman of posting her first victory of the young '99 season, as the Huskers would score two runs off of the Terps' errors in the second inning, and add another in the sixth inning. The Terps managed to post four hits, including doubles by Madea and senior Fawna Lackovic. Shipman recorded seven strikeouts and four walks. None of the Huskers' runs were earned, however.

In the nightcap, freshman pitcher Amanda Bettker suffered her first loss of her young career, dropping an 11-0 decision to the UCLA Bruins. She falls to 3-1 on the season.
