TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jennifer Potzman's two-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Maryland to a 5-3 victory over Florida State and a split of their Atlantic Coast Conference doubleheader with the Seminoles here Wednesday night.
Maryland, which lost the first game 4-1, is now 20-15 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Seminoles are 22-17-1 overall, 3-1 in ACC action.
Potzman's hit, which came with two out, plated Brooke Maslo, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Kelly Shipman, who drew an intentional walk after Fawna Lackovic had sacrificed runners to second and third. Shipman picked up the win, her 10th of the season, in relief of starter Amanda Bettker.
The win was the third in 14 games all-time for the Terps vs. Florida State.
The Terps, who trailed 2-1 after three innings, took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a two-RBI double by catcher Beth Radford, who had three RBIs on the night.
In Wednesday's first game, Christy Cerecedes' two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning plated all the runs the Seminoles needed in an eventual 4-1 victory over the Terps. Maryland scored its lone run on an RBI single by Kiesha Pickeral in the fourth to close to within 2-1, but FSU responded with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Shipman went the distance on the mound for the Terps, spacing six hits over six innings. Florida State's Jennifer Lyons got the win for the Seminoles, improving her season record to 10-9.
The Terps head now to Atlanta, where they will play in the Buzz Classic Friday through Sunday hosted by Georgia Tech.
