College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's gymnastics team scored its second-best score in Maryland history, 194.600, and recorded season highs on vault (48.775) and floor (48.925) to defeat Southeast Region rival George Washington this evening at Ritchie Coliseum, 194.600 - 192.175. This was the second time this season that the Terps have defeated the Colonials. Maryland beat George Washington, 189.825 186.150, on Jan. 23 at the George Washington Invitational. The win also improves the Terps record to 3-0 against the Colonials at home and marks the fourth time in the last five meetings against George Washington that the Terps have been victorious.
Individually, freshman Laura Moon (Scottsdale, Ariz/Saguaro) led the way for the Terps as she set the Maryland all-time all-around high with a score of 39.350 to take first place overall. This breaks the four-day-old record of 39.300 set by fellow freshman Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe). Moon also took first place on both vault and floor, scoring a 9.850 and 9.875, respectively. Both scores set career-highs for Moon and her score on vault tied the Maryland all-time high and team season-high, while her score on floor set the Maryland all-time high and team season-high. On bars, Moon scored a career-high 9.800, the sixth-highest score in Maryland history, to tie for second place and on beam, she recorded a score of 9.825 to tie for fourth place.
Freshman Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) continued her dominance on beam and vault as she placed second in both events, scoring a career-high 9.850 on beam and a 9.800 on vault. Her score on beam is the fourth highest in Maryland history and the fourth time in six meets that she has recorded a score of 9.7 or better, while her score on vault marked the third time in six meets that she has scored a 9.8 or higher.
Freshman Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) also got into the act as she scored a career-high and team season-high 9.850 on bars to take first place overall. This score also places as the fourth best bars score in Maryland history.
The Terps (11-4, 3-2 EAGL) will not compete again until Friday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on EAGL rival Towson University at 7:30 p.m.
