CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of Maryland posted a pair of victories on the opening day of the Triangle Classic here Friday, downing Ohio University 4-3 and East Carolina 6-0 to run its winning streak to four straight.
The Terps, who improved to 8-6 on the season, are scheduled to face Kentucky (9 a.m.) and Temple (11 a.m.) on Saturday prior to the start of championship bracket play on Sunday. The tournament is hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Bettker won for the fourth time in six starts by hurling the Terps to the one-run victory over Ohio in the first game. Bettker spaced six hits, walked none and struck out two in improving her record to 4-2. Offensively, the Terps made the most of their three hits, getting a two-run double from Kelly Shipman and a one-run double from Kiesha Pickeral in a three-run second inning. The Terps added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Annmarie Browne.
Shipman was credited with her second shutout of the season in game two, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters in a 6-0 win over East Carolina. The Terps scored one run in the first, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Amy Sandler led a nine-hit attack, going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Shipman aided her cause at the plate, singling home a pair of runs in the fourth. Beth Radford and Fawna Lackovic each went 2 for 4.
