Top Ranked Terps too Much for Dartmouth

March 20, 1999

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Dartmouth College women's lacrosse team played its opening game Saturday -- well, as if it was the opening game. The problem was that the opponent was top-ranked Maryland, and the Terrapins took advantage to record a 14-4 victory Saturday in a neutral-site game played at Springfield College.

While the eighth-ranked Big Green fell to 0-1, the Terps improved to 6-0. Five of Maryland's wins have come against teams ranked in the Top 10 of the preseason Brine poll.

The game got off to a sluggish start, with Maryland getting the only goals of the game's first 10 minutes from Christie Jenkins and Courtney Hobbs. Dartmouth cut the deficit in half at the 13:54 mark when freshman Alison Moulin notched her first collegiate goal.

Jenkins upped the lead to two again, before Jacque Weitzel recorded the first of her three tallies to make the score 3-2 with 11:52 to play in the half. After a timeout, though, Maryland came right out and scored off the ensuing draw. Jenkins then scored her third, and by the time the half rolled around the Terps led, 6-3.

The second half was all Maryland, as the Terps scored four times in the first 5:55 of the stanza and followed Dartmouth's only goal with four more. Allison Comito scored a pair of goals and assisted another, while Jenkins added two more to give her five on the day and Quinn Carney also scored twice. Maryland dominated the stat sheet, as well, outshooting Dartmouth by a healthy 36-12 margin. The Big Green's Sarah Hughes was outstanding in her college debut, making 22 saves, while Terp keeper Alex Kahoe had five stops. Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend, meeting Yale in New Haven on Saturday and following it up with Columbia next Sunday.
