Softball Loses in Gold Medal Bracket at FSU Invitational

March 13, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Kelly Shipman struckout 16 batters in two games on Saturday, but it was a triple and an error in the sixth inning against host Florida State that cost Maryland a trip to the semifinals in the Tallahassee Democrat FSU Invitational.

Shipman, who struckout nine batters in a 10-1 victory on Saturday afternoon over Florida Atlantic, added seven more Ks before absorbing a 2-0 loss to the Seminoles in the evening. Scoreless through five innings, Maryland allowed a pair of baserunners in the top of the sixth on a single and a fielding error by shorstop Jen Potzman. A two-out triple provided the only runs of the game.

Potzman, who contributed one of Maryland's four hits on the day, reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth as the Terps stranded a runner apiece in each of the last two innings.

The Terps were 3-0 in the tournament prior to the beginning of Saturday night's gold medal bracket. Maryland's loss drops them to a consolation bracket where they will play for fifth-place on Sunday afternoon. FSU advances to the tournament semifinals.

Earlier in the day, Shipman's pitching and an all-around batting attack scorched Florida Atlantic for 10 runs as the Terps downed the Owls to remain undefeated in the tournament. Maryland got multiple hits from Amy Sandler, Jen Potzman and Kiesha Pickeral. Sandler had a pair of doubles. Shipman, who won consecutive games after scattering six hits in a shutout win over Iowa State on Friday evening, also had a double.
