LOS ANGELES - Former University of Maryland basketball player
Rodney Elliott has continued his stellar play for the Los Angeles
Clippers in the FILA Summer Pro League. Through the first seven games of
the Clippers' summer league schedule, Elliott is among the team leaders
in numerous categories. Elliott is averaging 26.6 minutes per game, 13.1
points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. From the field, he is shooting 42
percent (28-for-66) which includes 35 percent (six-for-17) from beyond
the three-point line. Elliott is also shooting a remarkable 88 percent
(30-for-34) from the free-throw line.
In his first game against the Toronto Raptors, Elliott scored 12 points
on four-of-nine shooting, including two 3-pointers. In his third game
against the Vancouver Grizzlies he poured in 17 points and added four
rebounds in 29 minutes. Elliott followed that performance with another
17-point effort against the Golden State Warriors that included four
rebounds and three assists. He had his best game yet as he led the
Clippers with 20 points in only 24 minutes played against Seattle. In
that game, Elliott shot seve-of-14 from the field, including one
3-pointer, and five-of-five the free-throw line.
Elliott joined the Clippers summer team this year as a free agent. The
FILA Summer Pro League is a very well known and well-respected league in
which over 600 professional players have participated. A few stars who
have played in the league are David Robinson, Dominique Wilkins, Tim
Duncan, Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, and Clyde Drexler. A teammate of
Elliott on the Clippers is last year's number one draft pick, Michael
Olowokandi.
As a senior for the Terrapins in 1997-98, Rodney Elliott was a
third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as he averaged 15
points and 7.4 rebounds, both of which were career highs. He ranked 13th
in the ACC in scoring and tied for fourth in rebounding. Elliott was
also a co-captain and started all 32 games for the Terps. He is one of
only eight players in Maryland basketball history to have played in four
consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
