Volleyball Team Defeats Rutgers, Falls To No. 18 Colorado State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) posted 21 kills, leading Maryland (3-4) to a 15-12, 15-2, 9-15, 15-9 win over Rutgers (2-3) in the first day of the Maryland Tournament on Friday at Ritchie Coliseum. Earlier in the day, No. 18 Colorado State (4-0) handed the Terps a 16-14, 15-6, 15-12 setback.

In other action in the Maryland Tournament, Louisville (2-3) defeated Rutgers 18-16, 7-15, 15-10, 15-10, but was defeated by UNLV (4-0) in a five-game thriller 15-4, 12-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-12.

In its win over Maryland, Colorado State was paced by Catie Vagneur, who recorded 12 kills. Courtney Cox and Angela Knopf each added 11 kills. UNLV was paced by Jeanette Graves (17 kills) and Justine Kamelamela (16 kills) in its win over Louisville. For the Cardinals, Sonja Percan turned in 19 kills against UNLV and Kelly McCLain smashed 19 kills in the win over Rutgers.

Rutgers and Colorado State square off at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the second day of the Maryland Tournament. The host Terrapins meet Louisville at noon and UNLV at 7:30 p.m. Louisville also faces Colorado State tomorrow at 5 p.m., while UNLV also faces Rutgers at 2 p.m.
