Sept. 13, 1999

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Laurel native Gary Mankulish is positioned to challenge for medalist honors at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Classic college men's golf tournament, conducted at Osprey Point Golf Course. Maryland (598, +, the defending champion, is 15th out of 17 teams entering Tuesday's final round.

Mankulish fired a 69 in his first round on Monday, and followed with a 71 to match four other golfers at 140. Jedd McLuen of host College of Charleston is in second, just one stroke ahead.

North Florida, meanwhile, appears well on its way to running away with the team championship. UNF is 14-under after two rounds with four golfers all in the top 10 individuals.
