Sept. 3, 1999
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Underclassmen ruled. That seemed to be the theme as
an underclassmen-dominated Bradley team swept Maryland 3-0 (15-11, 16-14,
15-9) in the opening match of the Penn State Classic.
The Braves had three players posting double-digits in kills, led by
sophomore middle blocker Laura Benzig who tallied 13 against
the Terrapins. Fellow sophomore Samantha Hardwick had 23 assists and 11
digs in a match that handed the Terrapins their first lost of the
season.
Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy led Maryland (1-1) with 15 kills in the
contest. Maryland finished with a .164 attack percentage
while Bradley (1-0) posted a .250 mark.
The Penn State Classic continues Saturday with four matches. Penn State
(2-1) will open against Bradley at 10 a.m. A win would
break the NCAA record for consecutive home wins. Akron will face Maryland
at 1 p.m., followed by Bradley and Akron at 4 p.m. The Lions
will be the final match as they take on former-ACC foe Maryland in the 8
p.m. nightcap.
