CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The University of Maryland women's volleyball team lost to ACC-rival Virginia (0-3), 11-15, 12-15, 8-15, Tuesday evening in Charlottesville.
After jumping out to an early 8-1 lead in game one, it was all downhill from that point on for the Terps. Virginia took the first two games and never looked back, winning the third game 15-8.
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.), the team leader in kills and digs, paced the Terrapin attack with 13 kills and 14 digs. Senior middle hitter Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) also reached double-digit kills with 11 and freshman Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) recorded ten kills and ten digs on the night for Maryland.
With the loss, Maryland falls to 13-10 overall and 4-7 in the ACC. Virginia improves to 12-11 on the year and 6-5 in the conference. The defeat also keeps Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger just four wins shy of the 250-mark for her career at Maryland. Kruger, the ACC's winningest active coach, holds a 246-156 record during her tenure in College Park.
Each team won on its home court this season with Maryland winning at Ritchie Coliseum on Oct. 13 over the Cavaliers (3-1), 15-3, 17-15, 14-16, 15-12.
The Terrapins close out its four-match road trip this Sunday, Oct. 29, at Florida State. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Maryland returns to Ritchie Coliseum the following weekend, Nov. 3-4, with the final two home matches of the season versus Georgia Tech and Clemson.
