COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Juan Dixon scored 14 of his 20 points in the first
half as Maryland built a 21-point lead and cruised past London 110-77 in an
exhibition game Friday night.
Every player scored by halftime for the Terrapins, who led 62-41 after
shooting 67 percent from the field and outrebounding the Leopards 27-13.
It was the first preseason game for Maryland, which returns all five
starters from a team that went 25-10 last season. Lonny Baxter had 20 points
and 10 rebounds, and Steve Blake had 11 assists.
The Terrapins have one exhibition left before opening Nov. 20 against
Louisville in the Maui Invitational.
Maurice Robinson scored 19 for London, the fifth-place finisher in the
British Basketball League. The Leopards began a nine-game tour against U.S.
teams Thursday with an 85-62 win at Bucknell, but they had little chance
against a Maryland squad rich in talent and depth.
A baseline jumper by Dixon put the Terrapins up for good and sparked an 11-2
run that made it 18-9. The margin quickly reached 13 points, but the Leopards
stayed within striking distance behind Jason Kimbrough, who scored 12 in the
first half.
Up 40-31, Maryland pulled away with a 12-0 spree that featured four points
from Baxter and three apiece from Dixon, freshman center Chris Wilcox and LaRon
Cephas.
Drew Nicholas scored on a dunk with 22 seconds left, putting all 11
Terrapins in the scoring column. Freshman center Matt Slaninka dressed but did
not play and probably will be redshirted.
