Terps Take Two At Triangle Classic

Feb. 19, 2000

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland softball squad (6-4, 0-0 ACC) posted a 2-1 record on the second day of the Triangle Classic. Clutch hitting was the name of the Terps' game on Saturday as Maryland prevailed over Kansas, 2-0, in a pool play victory while outlasting Ohio, 5-4, in a championship bracket play thriller. Sandwiched between the pair of Terp victories was a 6-1 pool-play loss to the Campbell Fighting Camels.

Right-handed pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) garnered her fourth victory as the Terps shut out Kansas, 2-0, in the third game of pool play at the Triangle Classic. The sophomore scattered three Jayhawk hits and fanned six in the complete-game victory. The Terps got on the scoreboard in the first inning when junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) scored on a Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.) single. Potzman, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI against the Jayhawks, added an insurance run in the fifth with a two-out long ball to left-center. Potzman also hit a dinger in Friday's 7-1 win over Boston University.

The Terps were frustrated by Campbell in game four of pool play, managing one run on four hits against the Fighting Camels. Junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) drove in the Terps' lone run in the seventh inning with a double that scored Potzman. Right-handed pitcher Jen Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) struck out eight in the 6-1 loss.

A 2-2 record in Triangle Classic pool play earned the Terps a berth in the Silver Bracket, where Maryland faced Ohio in game one of championship play. Maryland opened the scoring in the first, putting three runs across on two hits. Ohio was able to take advantage of a few Terrapin mistakes in the middle innings, scoring one in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth, taking a 4-3 lead. The Terps, however, would not go quietly, getting runners aboard in every inning of the ball game. In the Terrapins' final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, Robinson led off with a single and advanced to second on a base hit by Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.). Both runners then advanced on a passed ball. The stage was set for second baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.), who stepped in with one out and belted a single to center, driving in the tying and game-winning runs. Callaway's late-inning heroics mark the second time this season that the freshman has driven in the game-winner. Shellhammer (2-3), who came on in relief in the third, allowed only one run and four hits in the last four innings. Sophomore catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, and senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

The Terrapins head into the final day of the Triangle Classic Tournament Sunday at 12:00 p.m. vs. Illinois-Chicago in championship bracket play. The championship round continues all day as the Terps are in the hunt for the Silver Bracket trophy.
