Tampa, Fla. - A hard fought battle with No. 19 Illinois-Chicago was spoiled in extra innings as Maryland (10-9) dropped a pair on the second day of the Speedline Invitational Tournament. The Terps and Flames traded extra-base hits throughout the game, but the Flames prevailed 4-3 in the ninth. Earlier in the day the Terrapins were defeated, 2-0, by Purdue.
In an intense, well-played Game 2, No. 19 Illinois-Chicago edged the Terps by a 4-3 count in nine innings. Down 1-0 in the second, freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) doubled and scored on a Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) base hit. The Terps increased their lead to 3-1 in the third on a RBI- double by junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.), who was in turn scored by a Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) RBI-single.
The Flames came back, however, tying the game at 3-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth by catcher Stefanie Christoferson. Illinois-Chicago placed a baserunner on second to begin the ninth in accordance with the International Tiebreaker rule, and was able to benefit as the game-winner scored on a Terp error. Sophomore Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.), coming on in relief in the seventh, suffered the loss.
The early game saw Bettker (4-4) take the loss against the Boilermakers, allowing one earned run on five hits. Purdue's first scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning, putting one run across on a Maryland error. The Boilers got another in the sixth on a RBI single. Freshman third baseman Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.) registered the Terps' only base hit as Purdue prevailed, 2-0.
Maryland plays Saturday at 10 a.m. in a "rubber match" with the University of Connecticut. The Terrapins and Huskies split a two game series at the Terrapin Invitational last weekend, with UConn prevailing 7-2 on March 4, while the Terps were victorious 6-3 on March 5. Championship bracket play begins Saturday afternoon and lasts all day Sunday.
