TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Maryland softball squad (12-13) fell in two extra-inning seesaw battles on the second day of the Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Invitational. The Terps finished their weekend with a 2-3 record, losing a 6-5 decision to Kansas before being downed 7-6 by Georgia Southern in the winner's bracket of the championship round of the tournament.
In a rematch of a 2-0 Maryland victory at the Triangle Classic Tournament, Kansas outlasted the Terps in a nine inning back-and-forth battle. The Terps scored two runs in the top of the fifth, when sophomore Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) came home on a Jayhawk throwing error and freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) scored on a Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of that inning, KU was able to capitalize on a pair of Terp errors for two scores. The Terps took a 2-1 lead in the eighth on a Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) RBI-single, but Kansas tied the score with a base knock of their own. In the ninth, an RBI groundout by Callaway and an Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) RBI-stroke gave the Terps a 5-3 advantage, but three KU singles and a sacrifice fly by Jayhawk sophomore Megan Urqhart put Kansas up by the 6-5 final. Sophomore hurler Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (6-6) went the distance in the loss.
Game two of championship bracket play featured another extra-inning match-up as Maryland was defeated by Georgia Southern, 7-6. The Eagles took an early lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Jaclyn Kaylor and a 2-run homer by Shannan Hoobin. The Terps evened the score in the third on a bases loaded single by Sweeney followed by a Potzman RBI-rap that scored sophomore Holly Baldwin (Olney, Md.). Madea then drove in Sweeney with a groundout to tie the game at three. After a Southern run in the fourth, Maryland established a 5-3 lead on a 2 RBI-single by Burrell. The ball game was tied until the eighth, when the Eagles scored one run on a Maryland miscue and another on a Stacie Cooper RBI-single. Terp pinch-hitter Browne singled in Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) in the bottom half of the inning, but it was not enough as Georgia Southern held on for the win.
Maryland departs for Atlanta, Ga., Sunday and will remain in Yellow Jacket country for the remainder of their spring break trip. The Terps' begin ACC/SASA conference play on Tuesday, March 21, in a double-header match-up with Georgia Tech, and will participate in the GT-Buzz Classic March 24-26.
