ATLANTA, Ga. -
The Maryland softball squad (14-13, 2-0 ACC) opened their 2000 conference schedule with a bang, racking up 25 hits, including three home runs and nine doubles, in a two-game sweep of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Terps were paced by sophomore Beth Radford's (Dunkirk, Md.) 4-for-8 (.500) performance, which included a home run, a run scored and four RBI. Junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) was an impressive 6-for-9 (.667), featuring a home run, two doubles, one RBI and one run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (7-6) picked up the complete-game victory for the Terps in Game 1, scattering six hits while fanning two batters. Georgia Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of an Erin Hawley RBI-double, but Maryland knotted the game in the top of the third when freshman Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) doubled to left, scoring fellow newcomer Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.). The Terrapins increased their lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) crossed on a Tech error and pinch-runner Amanda Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) scored on a RBI-single by outfielder Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.). In the top of the seventh, center fielder Burrell led off with her second round-tripper of the season, followed by a pair of doubles by Potzman and senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.). Potzman scored on Madea's rip, and the Terps set up a second-and-third situation when sophomore Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) singled to right. A 2 RBI-double by Robinson put the Terps up 7-1. Georgia Tech's Hawley hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning, but it was not enough as the Terps rolled, 7-3.
Game 2 featured even more Terp offense to complement the solid pitching of junior Jennifer Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.). The March 13 ACC Pitcher of the Week struck out four in 6.1 innings and allowed 11 hits en route to her sixth win of the season. Maryland was first on the scoreboard in Game 2, as a three-run blast by Radford in the first gave the Terps an early advantage. Four more Terp runs came in the fourth on base knocks by Robinson, Madea and Radford that crossed freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.), Potzman and Madea, respectively. The Yellow Jackets put runs across in the fourth and fifth on base hits by Ellen Styer and Lindsay Wood, but Callaway added insurance with the first home run of her collegiate career, a two-run bomb over the center field fence. Tech scored three in the seventh but the Terps prevailed, 9-5.
Maryland will remain in Yellow Jacket country for the rest of the week as part of their spring break trip. The Terps will use their time in Atlanta to prepare for the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, to be held March 24-26.
