March 26, 2000

MARIETTA, Ga. - The Maryland softball team (18-15, 2-0 ACC) finished its weekend at the Buzz Classic Sunday, falling 4-2 to SW Missouri State in the second round of championship bracket play. The loss to the Bears featured a 2-for-3 performance by Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.), highlighted by the freshman's second home run of the season. The Terps return to College Park after an 8-5 spring break road trip that began at the Florida State Invitational on March 17.

Sophomore pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (10-7) took the loss for the Terps, allowing three earned runs in three innings of work. SW Missouri State opened the scoring in the second with three consecutive singles by Tawnya Grout, Jami Canada and Larissa Shepherd. Canada and Shepherd knocked in two Bear runs in the fourth, and Amanda Bean's RBI single in the sixth extended SW Missouri State's lead to 4-0. Callaway led off the top of the seventh with her solo shot, putting the Terps on the scoreboard for the first time in the ballgame. Junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) then singled and scored on a fielder's choice by senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.), but the Bears held on to win by a 4-2 count. Madea and Burrell both finished the game 2-for-4.
