COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) continued to swing a hot bat as the Maryland softball team (20-15, 2-0 ACC) swept Morgan State in the first home doubleheader of the season. Radford furthered her hit streak to 11 games going 3-for-6 on the day with a pair of towering home runs and a double as the Terps rolled, 8-1 and 15-1.
Right-handed fireballer Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) overwhelmed the Bears in Game 1, allowing only one hit while striking out a career-tying 13 batters. The sophomore improved her season record to 11-7 with the complete-game victory. The Terps jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on base hits hits by freshman Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.) and senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) and never looked back. Two more runs came in the fourth, one crossed in both the third and fifth, and Radford put the icing on the cake in the sixth with a two-run blast over the right field fence. Robinson finished the game 2-for-2 with a run scored and one batted in, while Radford was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Southpaw Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) earned her third victory of the season in Game 2, fanning four in a five-inning, eight-run rule Terp win. Maryland sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring 11 runs on nine base hits. The Terps and Bears exchanged runs in the third, but Radford put the Terps up by the final 15-1 margin, scrambling a three-run bomb to left center in the fourth. Radford concluded the second game 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Robinson was solid again at the plate with a 2-for-3, two-run, two-RBI effort while junior center fielder Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
The Terps host their second consecutive home doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. when Penn State comes to College Park.
