Softball Splits Opening Day Of Terrapin Invitational

March 4, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the third time in her short collegiate career, freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) displayed her flair for the dramatic. Callaway's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon boosted the Terrapins (7-6, 0-0 ACC) past the Princeton Tigers on day one of the Terrapin Invitational. The Terps would go 1-1 on the day, dropping the afternoon game to Connecticut.

The Terrapins struck early vs. Princeton, putting four runners across in the first inning. In her first game back from an injury suffered on Feb. 5, freshman outfielder Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) led off the inning number one with a line-drive double. Sweeney scored on a Sarah Putnam (Chesapeake, Va.) single to right, and Putnam advanced when junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) roped a single to left. With two on, senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) blasted a three-run shot to right, increasing the Terps' advantage to 4-0.

Princeton did not go quietly, taking advantage of a few Terp miscues and tying the game with a four-run fourth. The Tigers went ahead, 5-4, in the sixth courtesy of a Brianne Galiciano RBI single.

Up came the Terps in the bottom of the seventh, down by one run. Putnam reached on a Tiger error and pinch-runner Holly Baldwin (Olney, Md.) was sacrificed to second by Potzman. Madea was intentionally walked. A single by sophomore Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) advanced Baldwin to third and pinch-runner Amanda Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) to second. First baseman Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) then singled, driving in Baldwin and loading the bases for Callaway. With the score tied at five apiece, the freshman sparkplug singled through the right side, knocking in her third game-winner of the year. Callaway also displayed late game heroics in a 1-0 victory over South Florida on Feb. 4 and on Feb. 19, when the Terps overcame Ohio University. Junior Jen Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.), who came on in relief in the fifth inning, was credited with the Terps' 6-5 win and improved her record to 3-3.

The Terps were later defeated by Connecticut as Maryland was unable overcome UConn's offensive barrage. Left-hander Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) took the loss as the Huskies prevailed, 7-2. Radford was 2-for-3 vs. UConn with a RBI-double and arun scored. Callway was 2-for-3 as well.

The first two games of the second-ever Terrapin Invitational saw Princeton open its season with a 4-0 victory over LaSalle, and Connecticut prevail over the Explorers as well by a 8-0 count. Round-robin softball action resumes Sunday at 9 a.m., when UConn takes on Princeton. A Maryland-UConn rematch is set for 11 a.m., LaSalle and Princeton face-off at 1 p.m. and LaSalle and Maryland meet at 3 p.m.
