COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland softball team (22-19, 2-0 ACC/SASA) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to non-conference local rival Towson (18-21) Wednesday at a blustery North Softball Complex on the University of Maryland campus. The Tigers took a pulse-pounding extra-inning Game 1 from the Terps by a 4-2 count before handing Maryland a 1-4 loss in Game 2.
Sophomore Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) suffered the defeat in the early game, a contest that lasted nine full innings. Bettker (12-9) allowed only two earned runs on nine hits in the complete game loss, striking out six. Towson carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning when Terp senior Sarah Putnam (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) reached on Tiger errors. Designated player Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) drew a walk to load the bases for catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.), who came through in the clutch with a two-RBI single to left to tie the game at 2-2. The Tigers capitalized on a pair of Terp miscues in the top of the ninth to go up 4-2, and the Terps were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.
Lefty Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (4-5) struck out three in Game 2, scattering five hits across seven innings and allowing one earned run. The Terps found themselves down by a 1-0 count in the second, but with two out freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) smacked an RBI-single to right center, scoring sophomore Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.). The Tigers put one run across in the fourth on an RBI-groundout by pinch-hitter Marisa Moore, and tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to win by a 4-1 final.
The Terps head south to take on conference foes North Carolina and No. 24 East Carolina this Friday, Apr. 14, and Sunday, Apr. 16, respectively.
