BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Junior Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) paced the Terps with a 4-for-5 effort and a home run as the Maryland softball squad (22-17, 2-0 ACC/SASA) took both ends of a doubleheader from the Long Island Blackbirds. Browne's offense was complemented by superior pitching performances by the sophomore tandem of Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) as the Terps rolled, 4-1 and 5-1.

Terp hurler Bettker (12-8) was the victor in Game 1, striking out three in her 16th complete game of the season. The Blackbirds got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on three base hits, including a solo home run by sophomore Leah Sanchez. Bettker slammed the door shut after the opening stanza, finishing the contest with six hitless innings. The Terps tied the game at one apiece in the third when junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) singled in Browne. Junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) singled and scored on a Cortney Madea (Northhampton, Pa.) base knock in the fourth, and the Terps' lead increased to 3-1 in the sixth courtesy of a Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) RBI-single. Browne made the final score 4-1 in the seventh with a solo bomb to left, her first of the season.

Southpaw Carpenter (4-4) fanned three in Game 2, pitching seven solid innings. The Terps opened the scoring in the third inning when Browne led off with a single and scored on a Blackbird miscue. Sophomore Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) blasted a solo shot to begin the fourth inning, and Radford singled in Potzman in the fifth to make the score 3-0. Long Island used two base hits and a passed ball to cut the Terps' lead to 3-1 in the sixth, but the Terps added insurance in the seventh on a Radford sacrifice fly and a Pickeral RBI-double. Pickeral finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Terps are back in action Sunday, Apr. 9 in a doubleheader vs. George Mason. Those games are rescheduled from Apr. 4's rainout.
